DLC for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was confirmed in the final Ultimate Direct held on November 1st, 2018. The DLC is available to purchase on the Nintendo eShop.
Bundles[]
- Fighters Pass was released on November 1st, 2018 which includes DLC fighters #71 to #75, alongside their stages and music when available, all for a discount. A Mii Fighter costume based on Rex from Xenoblade Chronicles 2 comes as a bonus of purchasing the pass. It costs $24.99 to buy.
- Fighters Pass Vol. 2 was first made available for pre-purchase on January 28th, 2020 which will include DLC fighters #76 to #82, alongside their stages and music when available, all for a discount. A Mii Fighter costume modeled after the Ancient Soldier Gear from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild comes as a bonus of purchasing the pass. It costs $28.99 to buy.
Challenger Packs[]
There are a total of 11 Challenger Packs. Each pack will include a fighter, a stage, and additional music tracks and spirits, and will cost $5.99 each to buy.
- Challenger Pack #1 includes the DLC character Joker, as well as the stage Mementos, music from the Persona series, and a Persona 5-themed Spirit Board.
- Challenger Pack #2 includes the DLC character Hero, as well as the stage Yggdrasil's Altar, music, and a Dragon Quest-themed Spirit Board.

Joker, the main protagonist from Atlus' Persona 5, is a downloadable character that was released on April 17th, 2019, as a part of Challenger Pack 1.
Four protagonists from Square Enix's Dragon Quest series acting as a single newcomer under the collective name Hero are a single downloadable character that was released on July 30th, 2019, as a part of Challenger Pack 2.

Modes and Features[]
As a part of v3.0.0, released on April 17th, 2019:
- Stage Builder returns from previous installments; it allows the player to create custom stages.
- Video Editor lets players edit their videos with transition effects, text, and music.
- Shared Content lets players share and discover custom stages, Mii Fighters, and videos. (A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for sharing and downloading community-made content.)
As a part of v4.0.0, released on July 30th, 2019:
- World of Light mode now has a Very Easy difficulty option.
- Spectator Mode lets players spectate other players' matches and predict the winner to earn points, which can be used to buy items from a special Vault Shop.
- Online Tourney mode lets players participate in in-game online tournaments with preset rules that change periodically. Special event tourneys are also held periodically. (A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to play online tourneys.)
As a part of v5.0.0, released on September 4th, 2019:
- Home-Run Contest returns again, allowing players to rack up damage on a Sandbag and launch it as far as possible, either with themselves or with another player.
As a part of v8.0.0, released on June 29th, 2020:
- Players can now replay matches of Spirits that are present in their Spirit Collection, with a dedicated score system for it.
- Players can now change the rules for a Battle Arena without having to remake a new one.
As a part of v8.1.0, released on August 4th, 2020:
- Battlefield, Big Battlefield, Final Destination, and Small Battlefield, now can play any song from the entire soundtrack.
- Adjustments to the Online have been made including the matchmaking, an expansion into the eligibility for Elite Smash, and the values for Global Smash Power calculation. Further investigations and adjustments are promised for future updates.
As a part of v10.1.0, released on December 22, 2020:
- The music that can be played on Battlefield, Big Battlefield, Final Destination, and Small Battlefield can now be randomly chosen to come from either the entire soundtrack or the Smash Bros. tracks only much like how it was pre-v8.1.0.
- Cloud has gained a new version of Omnislash, Omnislash Ver. 5, exclusively for his Advent Children palette swaps.
