Downloadable Content (also known as DLC) is content that is not in the base game cartridge, and needs to be downloaded via Nintendo eShop or other sites to be available in the game. Currently, DLC packs 1 and 2 have been released with a third planned to be on the way.

Characters
Mewtwo
Mewtwo appears as a downloadable character that can be downloaded by buying and registering both versions of the game on Club Nintendo. It is also available as a paid DLC. It costs $3.99 to buy it for one version and $4.99 to buy it for both.
Lucas
Lucas was released as a downloadable character on June 14, 2015. It costs $3.99 to buy him on one version and $4.99 to buy him on both.
Ryu
Ryu was released as a downloadable character on June 14, 2015. It costs $5.99 to buy him and Suzaku Castle on one version and $6.99 to buy them on both.
Roy
Roy was released as a downloadable character on June 14, 2015. It costs $3.99 to buy him on one version and $4.99 to buy him on both.
Mii Costumes
It has been confirmed that Mii Fighters will have downloadable costumes that will give various outfits:
- Cat/Monkey outfits for Brawler and Swordfighter.
- Heihachi outfit for Brawler
- Akira and Jacky outfits for Brawler
- Link outfit and hat for Swordfighter
- Dunban outfit for Swordfighter
- Zero outfit for Swordfighter
- X's and Proto Man's armor and helmet for Gunner
- Splatoon outfits for Gunner
- K.K. Slider outfit for Gunner
- MegaMan.EXE outfit for Gunner
- Isabelle outfit for Gunner

Stages
Miiverse
Miiverse was released on June 14, 2015, free with a patch update.
Suzaku Castle
Suzaku Castle was released alongside Ryu on June 14, 2015 as Ryu's home stage. It and Ryu cost $5.99 for one version and $6.99 for both.
SSB64 Stages
Three stages from the original Super Smash Bros. will be released for both versions. These are Dream Land, Hyrule Castle, and Peach's Castle. The backgrounds retain the same graphics, with the only difference being the characters.
Dream Land was released on June 14, 2015, costing $1.99 for one version and $2.99 for both.
