In Brawl

The Deku Nut is a type of explosive item in Brawl. If hit by it directly it explodes like a Bob-omb, doing relativly high damage and has a fantastic knockback. It is possible to be hit indirectly by a Deku Nut too. By thowing a Deku Nut short, it explodes in a flash of light. Any player around the blast site will become dazed (as if they had Shield Break). If the Deku Nut is left alone for to long it will start to expand and shrink rapidly. After a set time it will explode, dazing all around it. It will also explode if disturbed by damage.

Trophy description

Items that explode in a flash of blinding light shortly after they appear or when they take damage. Those caught in a blast will be dazed and immobile for a few moments. If the item is thrown, it has the same effect on whomever it hits. In The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Deku Nuts stunned enemies and were indispensable when Link was surrounded.
