“ | Deflect direct attacks from opponents, briefly staggering them before launching a counterattack. Projectiles won't affect you if countered. | ” |
—Description from Ultimate's Move List. |
Counterattack is Sora's down special move.
Overview[]
Much like other down special Counterattacks, Sora will enter into a defensive stance by holding the Kingdom Key Keyblade in front of him in a blocking position; if he is struck in this pose, the opponent's attack will be canceled entirely and enter into a staggered state, allowing Sora to retaliate automatically with an upward slash. Similar to Gut Check, the attack is only active in front of him, leaving his backside exposed and vulnerable. Uniquely, the move can also deflect projectiles (as in allow it to phase through Sora unharmed), but also give its damage a 1.4x multiplier like a regular Reflection.
Origin[]
Counterattack is one of Sora's equippable combat abilities in the first Kingdom Hearts. In the game, the move allows Sora to inflict a Critical Hit on enemies, as well as regain some MP if successful. It can also be deflected by an enemy's stronger attack, though this can be circumvented with equipping a more sturdier Keyblade. Counterattack would later be replaced by Counterguard in Kingdom Hearts II-onwards, an action ability used in conjunction with Guard that allows Sora to parry an attack and strike back with an invisible blast from his Keyblade, which is what may have inspired its depiction in Smash. Another similar attack called Auto-Counter is introduced in Birth By Sleep, a move that allows Terra and Aqua to automatically retaliate if they have been blown back by an enemy.
