This article is about Charizard's appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. For other uses, see Charizard. In addition, for information about Charizard in regards to Pokémon Trainer, see Pokémon Trainer, Squirtle, and Ivysaur.

Charizard, also known in Japan as Lizardon (リザードン, Rizādon), is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl in a sense; it is one of three Pokémon that are played through Pokémon Trainer, the other two being Squirtle and Ivysaur. Like Pit and Meta Knight, Charizard is able to glide and jump multiple times in mid-air. However, Charizard's glide is somewhat less maneuverable than those of Pit and Meta Knight.

Charizard has a surprisingly fast running speed (tied with Pikachu), though it is true to its speed stat in the Pokémon games. However, it has the slowest walking speed in the game. It is the fifth heaviest character. Charizard cannot be used by the Pokémon Trainer in Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary until he battles and captures the creature.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Fast running speed; fastest running speed for a heavyweight in the game (compared to other heavyweights such as Bowser)
  • Two midair Jumps.
  • Heavy
  • Can Glide.
  • High-damaging, moderate-ranged attacks.
  • Rock Smash has huge knockback and damage, and can also block projectiles.
  • Hard to KO due to heaviness.
  • Down Throw can KO at high percents.
  • Up Special Move gives Super Armor Frames.
  • Up aerial is quick, can juggle well, and works well with its multiple jumps.
  • Good aerial movement.
  • Can be switched with Ivysaur or Squirtle as the situation may require.
  • Long range, powerful tilt attacks.
  • Flamethrower can edge guard
  • Jumping before using Flamethrower racks up lots of damage and stops attacks.
  • Rock Smash is great for combos, especially with Flamethrower, and is an excellent killing move.
  • Forward Smash is one of the strongest in the game

Cons:

  • Very slow walk speed.
  • Large target.
  • Easy character to combo and juggle.
  • Some attacks are slow.
  • Fly has a linear path.
  • Pokémon Change is easily punishable and is mandatory due to the stamina mechanic and the fact that Charizard is replaced by Squirtle if KO'd.
  • Doesn't jump high.
  • Only has two mid-air jumps.

Standard Moves

Ground Attacks

Normal

  • Neutral Attack - Right hand slash, left hand slash, then a smack with the right wing.
  • Dashing Attack - Slides forwards and raises one leg for a sliding kick.
  • Strong Up - Thrusts wings above head and gives a little hop.
  • Strong Side - Sweeps flaming tail forward.
  • Strong Down - Bites forward at the ground in front of it.

Smash

  • Side Smash - Slams its head forward, fairly slowly.
  • Up Smash - Bats upwards with both of its wings, hitting twice.
  • Down Smash - Hops a little off of the ground and stomps, wings hitting the ground on either side of it.

Other

  • Ledge Attack -Quick claw swipe as it pulls itself to the stage.
  • 100% Ledge Attack -Slow headbutt,medium knockback.
  • Floor Attack -Quick tail sweep, hits on both sides very fast.

Aerial Attacks

  • Neutral Aerial - Spins in a circle, hitting with its flaming tail.
  • Forward Aerial - Breathes a cone of flame forward and a little down. Good knockback, fairly quick, and works as a fairly effective Wall of Pain. However, bizarrely enough, the attack may have no knockback depending on where it hits, only damage.
  • Back Aerial - Hits behind it with its fiery tail.
  • Up Aerial - Bites upwards. Fairly weak knockback.
  • Down Aerial - Stomps downward. This move can spike.
  • Glide Attack -Spins out of glide and hits with wings, good interruption move. This is identical to its dash attack with a battering item (Beam Sword, Home-run Bat, etc.).

Grabs and Throws

  • Pummel - Bites them.
  • Forward Throw - Grabs opponent in jaws, spins them, then releases them in front of itself.
  • Back Throw - Grabs opponent in jaws, spins them, then releases them behind itself.
  • Up Throw - Throws opponent upwards and rams them with its head.
  • Down Throw - Slams its opponent on the floor, and then breathes fire on them.
