Chain Chomps (ワンワン, Wanwan) are common mob enemies in the Super Mario franchise.
They joined Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U as a Assist Trophy, and later returned for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. A piece of Headgear for the Mii Fighters modeled after it is also available in both games.
Character Description[]
Chain Chomps are living ball-and-chains, characterized by their large shark-like teeth and big round eyes. They act similarly to guard dogs, often barking and being tethered to a pole by their chain tails; their dog-like qualities were inspired by a dog that nearly bit a young Shigeru Miyamoto, only for it to be held back by its leash. As such, they attack by lunging at Mario and his allies in an attempt to bite them.
Unlike other typical Mario enemies, Chain Chomps are virtually invincible and usually cannot be beaten through traditional means unless Mario uses a hammer or Super Star; the only way to get rid of one is freeing them from the pole, where if done, they will jump around the area for a while before disappearing.
The standard Chain Chomps made their debut in Super Mario Bros. 3, seen tethered to a wood block but can free themselves if they lunge at Mario 50 times or if the timer hits 160 seconds. Since then, they have reappeared in almost all major Mario games, both as enemies and as items, and with a few introducing variations. A Chain Chomp would eventually make its playable debut in Mario Tennis Aces, holding the racket in its mouth.
Outside of the Mario and Yoshi games, Chain Chomps have also made appearances in The Legend of Zelda games, most notably in Link's Awakening which features three domesticated Chain Chomps named BowWow, ChowChow, and CiaoCiao, and are owned by Madam MeowMeow. Chain Chomps are also enemies in A Link to the Past and items in Four Swords Adventure and Hyrule Warriors. A Chain Chomp is also a foot weapon in Bayonetta 2, which can be equipped by either Bayonetta or Jeanne after completing the game on Hard mode or (in the Nintendo Switch version) scanning certain amiibo.
Sub-species[]
- Introduced in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

- Incoming Chomp - Another unchained Chomp that will lunge at Yoshi from the background.
- Kinklink - Introduced in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. A Chomp variation Bowser uses to hold up the chandeliers in Bowser's Keep.
- Big Chomp - Introduced in Super Mario 64. It is merely a giant Chain Chomp, seen in Bob-omb Battlefield guarding a Power Star behind a gate.

- Chain Chomplets - Introduced in Super Mario Sunshine. Small, puppy-like Chain Chomps that live in Pianta Village that heat up to extreme temperatures when irritated, causing them to leave behind a trail of burning goop. Mario must cool them down with F.L.U.D.D. and launch them into a river to earn a Shine Sprite.
- Introduced in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga / Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions:

- Silver Chomp - Introduced in Super Mario Galaxy 2. A silver variation of Chainless Chomps that have the ability to target and follow Mario.
- Frame Chomp - Introduced in Yoshi's Woolly World / Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World. They are Chain Chomps that are made out of wires, making them appear transparent. They become Chomp Rocks if Yarn Yoshi hits them with a yarn ball.
- Princess - Introduced in Paper Mario: Color Splash. A female Chain Chomp made of layered cardboard that has grown large due to Kamek's magic. Mario and Huey must lead her back to her home in Mondo Woods.
- Chain Chompikins - Introduced in Super Mario Odyssey. A special Gold Chomp that serves as the pet for Madame Broode. Mario must capture it with Cappy in order to whip at back at the Madame's face.
- Paper Macho Chain Chomp - Introduced in Paper Mario: The Origami King. It is a giant, three-dimensional Chain Chomp made of Papier-mâché that only serves as an obstacle in one of the five hot springs of Shangri-Spa - as such, it is not fought directly.
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]
Aesthetic[]
Chain Chomps appear in the background of the Yoshi's Island stage.
Trophy Description[]
A black, spherical character thought to be made of some metal, such as iron. Although usually tethered down with a chain, Chain Chomps will eagerly chomp at passersby, inflicting major damage. In Super Mario 64, a Chain Chomp appears in the first level. It cannot be defeated, but you can daze it temporarily by throwing bombs at it.

Assist Trophy[]
A Chain Chomp appears as a summonable Assist Trophy. Once summoned, it will stay positioned to wherever the summoner was and attack much like how it normally does in the Mario games. It will move around its pole before targeting an opponent and lunging forward; it will do this twice before disappearing. The Chain Chomp will have an active hitbox on its body, as touching it inflicts minor damage, while the bite inflicts 24%. The lunging attack can also be cut short if it intercepts with a platform.
Smash Run enemy[]
Chain Chomps can also appear during Smash Run. They behave similarly to how they are as an Assist Trophy, but can now be defeated. Its main body have Super Armor, but the wooden peg they are attached to is very weak and vulnerable. If defeated, it will leave behind a large amount of stat boosts.
Mii Fighter Costumes[]
Headgear for the Mii Fighters based on a Chain Chomp is available in the base game. It can acquired at random with a Custom Part in the Nintendo 3DS version, but is a Challenge reward in the Wii U version, which is unlocked by getting a chain of 100 or more in Trophy Rush.
Smash Tour[]
The Chain Chomp trophy is a blue item that can be acquired during Smash Tour. If used, it will launch nearby opponents on the board away, causing some to potentially drop some fighters they've already collected.
Aesthetic[]
Chain Chomps return as a background character in the Yoshi's Island (Brawl) stage in the Nintendo 3DS version.
Trophy Description[]
NTSC[]
This beast frequently appears in the Super Mario series, and it is definitely equal parts bark and bite. No surprise it's often chained to something. In Smash Bros., it's connected to a stump in the ground and will lash out anyone who gets close. Don't even bother trying to teach it manners.
PAL[]
An iron ball with a face, completely with shiny white teeth, that shows up fairly often in the Mario series. They're impossible to tame, so they're almost always chained to a post, and this game's no exception. Seriously, don't go anywhere near them unless you want to end up a Chomp's dinner.
- NES - Super Mario Bros. 3 (02/1990)
- Wii - New Super Mario Bros. Wii (11/2009)
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]
Chain Chomp returns as an Assist Trophy with no noticeable functional changes, although it can now be defeated for an extra point in a Time match. Its design also now matches its appearance in Super Mario Odyssey. The Headgear for Mii Fighters based on Chain Chomp also returns, once again part of the base game. It can only be found in the Castle sub-area of The Light Realm in World of Light. They also have a spirit battle, in which they are represented by several metal PAC-MANs with the aforementioned assist trophy spawning after a while. Chain Chomps also once again reappear in the background of Yoshi's Island (Brawl).
Spirits[]
A Spirit of Chain Chomp is available in the base game. It is a Primary Attack Spirit under the Advanced class. Its Spirit Battle uses a Metal Pac-Man (due to their similar appearance) and will attack primarily with Power Pellet (as it imitates a Shark Chomp). Pac-Man will be assisted also by the Chain Chomp itself. The stage is the Battlefield Form of Yoshi's Island (Brawl), as Chain Chomps are Background characters in said stage, and the song that plays is "Main Theme - Super Mario 64" - a reference to the Chain Chomp mission in Bob-omb Battlefield. The Spirit can also be purchased at Timmy and Tommy's for 1000SP.
A Chain Chomp is also featured in the Goo-Goo Buggy Spirit, which is also a Primary Attack Spirit under the Advanced class. Its Spirit Battle uses both Mario and Luigi (due to the Goo-Goo Buggy being the default kart for Baby Mario and Baby Luigi), who have increased move speed, and are also assisted by a Chain Chomp (as it was the special item for both babies). The stage is Figure-8 Circuit and the song that plays is "Mushroom Gorge - Mario Kart Wii". The Spirit is also a Challenge reward, unlocked after getting 3 KO's within the first minute of a match; the Spirit Battle will also be available in the Spirit Board after unlocking it.
