The cardboard box can be used to damage an opponent.
The Cardboard Box is used in all of Snake's taunts in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The Cardboard box was first introduced in the E3 2006 trailer, whereas Snake was hiding in it. It also has its own trophy. Before it was confirmed to be a taunt, it was thought to be his shield or his Down B. The box can be grabbed like an item, ending the taunt. In the Metal Gear games, Snake uses the box on his missions to sneak around without being spotted by guards. The fan community (especially in fanfiction) greatly enjoys making fun of Snake's affinity for the box, portraying him as a hobo or overly protective of his box.
Role in Subspace Emissary
The Cardboard Box appears in Halberd's cargo hold before Snake is revealed to be in it. In a later cut scene Snake sheds the box saying "Kept you waiting, huh?" Later, while he is sneaking around the ship, he hides under the box again to avoid detection by Lucario and Meta Knight. However, Lucario uses his Aura to see Snake and removes the Cardboard Box, resulting in the trademark !.
Trophy Description
A common, run-of-the-mill cardboard box that is somehow very effective at preventing detection by enemies. Hide inside it and enemies will walk on by. But put it somewhere too odd and you'll be discovered. You can move while in the box, but if anyone sees the box moving, you're in trouble. Both Liquid and Solid Snake have a deep affection for cardboard.

Trivia
- Solid Snake can be seen inside of the Cardboard Box trophy.
- The Cardboard Box deals 1%-2% damage if it hits anyone, meaning all three of Snakes taunts can do damage.
- The cardboard box Snake uses have a Smash Ball icon with the words "Smash Bros" printed by the side and the infamous "!" from the metal gear franchise on the front and the back underneath the handles.
- If the box is picked up by another player, it will instantly be thrown in the direction that was held, much like performing a grab on the various enemies in the Subspace Army, so the box can't be carried.
- Unlike in most of the MGS series, this box has no bottom flaps.
- Contrary to his games, Snake can still be detected by the searchlight on the Shadow Moses Island stage while in his box which is probably because he has used it before to get through so they 'know all his tricks'.
- This is the only taunt (besides Luigi's) to do damage.
