The Cardboard Box is used in all of Snake's taunts in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The Cardboard box was first introduced in the E3 2006 trailer, whereas Snake was hiding in it. It also has its own trophy. Before it was confirmed to be a taunt, it was thought to be his shield or his Down B. The box can be grabbed like an item, ending the taunt. In the Metal Gear games, Snake uses the box on his missions to sneak around without being spotted by guards. The fan community (especially in fanfiction) greatly enjoys making fun of Snake's affinity for the box, portraying him as a hobo or overly protective of his box.

Cardboardbox 2

The cardboard box can be used to damage an opponent.

The Cardboard Box is an item that appears in all three of Solid Snake's taunts in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and it was first introduced in the E3 2006 trailer, with Snake hiding in it. It also has its own trophy. The box can be grabbed like an item, ending the taunt. In the Metal Gear games, Snake uses the box on his missions to sneak around without being spotted by guards, so long as it is used sensibly. Chronologically it was first used in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater by Naked Snake/Big Boss as early as 1964, and most recently used by Raiden in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, set in 2018. Peace Walker revealed that humourous derivatives of the box were also developed, such as the "Tank Box" and the "Love Box." While cardboard boxes were absent from Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, they would return in the main game, The Phantom Pain, used mainly by Venom Snake and other Diamond Dogs soldiers, with the added ability to stand up while wearing a box and an aim a weapon from out of it, slide using the box and attach various posters to the box (from Soviet propaganda posters to an anime idol girl poster depicting Paz) as a means of distracting the enemy.

In taunts

All three taunts involve Snake crouching under, then lifting the cardboard box off his body. The box Snake uses in Brawl has a Smash Ball icon with the words "Smash Bros" printed by the side and the infamous "!" from the Metal Gear franchise on the front and the back underneath the handles. Unlike in most of the Metal Gear Solid series, it has no bottom flaps. The Cardboard Box deals 1%-2% damage if it hits anyone - all three of Snake's taunts can damage. The only other damaging taunt in the game is Luigi's. If the box is picked up by another player, it will instantly be thrown in the direction that was held, much like performing a grab on most enemies in the Subspace Army. The box cannot be carried by any character except Donkey Kong. Contrary to his games, Snake can still be detected by the searchlight on the Shadow Moses Island stage while in his box.

Role in Subspace Emissary

The Cardboard Box appears in Halberd's cargo hold before Solid Snake is revealed to be in it. In a later cut scene, Snake sheds the box, saying "Kept you waiting, huh?" Later, while he is sneaking around the ship, he hides under the box again to avoid detection by Lucario and Meta Knight. However, Lucario uses his Aura to see Snake and removes the Cardboard Box, resulting in the trademark ! to appear.

Trophy

Solid Snake can be seen inside of the Cardboard Box trophy.

Description: A common, run-of-the-mill cardboard box that is somehow very effective at preventing detection by enemies. Hide inside it and enemies will walk on by. But put it somewhere too odd and you'll be discovered. You can move while in the box, but if anyone sees the box moving, you're in trouble. Both Liquid and Solid Snake have a deep affection for cardboard.
