The Bytan (バイタン, Bitan in Japan) is an enemy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl's Subspace Emissary mode. They make their first appearance in the Ruined Zoo level.
Name origin[]
The word "bytan" can refer to a person who asks others to do seemingly endless tasks, usually as an undeserved punishment. If one waits for the Bytans to multiply, beating them will be seemingly endless.
Biology[]
A Bytan resembles a limbless spherical being that has a colored side with a single red eye and a white side with a toothy smile. While it attacks, the Bytan can perform a ramming strike, which it charges up by rolling in place. It can duplicate itself within seconds by shooting more of its kind out of its eye, forcing the player to destroy it quickly before things get out of hand; it attacks more on lower difficulties while multiplying faster on higher ones. The Bytan comes in nine different colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, brown, and black.
There are also giant-sized Bytans, which are about four times larger and have roughly three times more health. Giant Bytans are far less likely to multiply than their small kin are.
No matter their size and color, though, a Trophy Stand thrown at them will transform them into the same trophy, which shows all of their colours. They bear a resemblance to the Pokémon Voltorb and Electrode, a veteran of Smash Brothers and may be a nod to them.
Trophy description[]
As mentioned above, Bytans can be captured with the Trophy Stand, which shows all of their colours around each other. The Super Smash Bros. 4 trophy is only obtainable in the 3DS version, where you can purchase them from a shop.
Brawl[]
A spherical creature divided into two colors. There's a big, staring eye in the colored section, and the white part contains the creature's gaping mouth and exposed fangs. It rolls along and smashes into all enemies it meets. After a short time, it will pop another Bytan out of its eye, so if you leave it alone, it will continue to produce one Bytan after another.
3DS[]
These spherical enemies made their first appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. They have a white portion underneath with sharklike teeth and an upper portion with a giant red eye. They attack by rolling straight into you. Try not to leave them alone for too long-they multiply by popping more Bytans out of their eyes!
Trivia[]
- If the player lets them continue multiplying (assuming they can survive the ordeal), it is not known if there is an upper limit for the number of Bytans.
