Awakening Aether (覚醒天空) is Chrom's Final Smash in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Overview[]

When initiating, Chrom may shout "Now I'm mad!", "Anything can change!", or "Your end has come!". Chrom will proceed to rush forward and perform an upward slash, which will deal 13.2% to anyone he connects with and trap them for the rest of the Final Smash. He then proceeds to jump backwards, charge Falchion quickly, before rushing forward and slash once more while shouting "AETHER!", dealing 43.2% damage and launching them, with the Final Smash dealing a grand total of 56.4% damage with diagonal knockback.

Chrom's initial dash covers slightly more than half of Battlefield, making it reliable for recovery, and its vertical hitbox can catch aerial opponents as well. Awakening Aether also deals considerable damage, and its diagonal knockback can allow Chrom to launch opponents toward the blast lines more reliably, especially at the edges of the stage. However, Awakening Aether has a long startup sequence, making it possible for opponents to avoid Chrom's initial charge.

Origin[]

Awakening Aether is based off of the skill Aether in the Fire Emblem series, which first appeared in Path of Radiance as Ike's signature skill. The animation of Awakening Aether is the same as the one used in Awakening, which appears as a skill used by Chrom as a Level 5 Great Lord.

Trivia[]

  • If Awakening Aether is fully executed, the camera angle will shift diagonally to resemble its appearance in Awakening. However, if Final Smash Meter is enabled or if Chrom and an opponent are near a wall, the camera angle will not change.
  • In Chrom's reveal, he shouts "Aether!" in one phrase before hitting opponents with the final hit. However, in the final release, he spaces it out in two phrases by shouting "Ae-ther!"
